Lake Havasu City -Divisions IX and X, along with Auxiliarists from Divisions IV,V,VII,VIII,XII,XIII AND XIV, put on a terrific Air/Sea show. Some 62 spectator boats were counted along with the campers, cats, cars, and people on the beach. Two of our Auxiliary aircraft put on a spectacular exhibition opening with a low high-speed pass up the river ending in a split chandelle. Then two more runs were made at low altitude for message drops to surface craft. Next, three sky divers did a free-fall for 2000 feet and then filled their chutes for a spot landing on the water. A smoke bomb was sent up from the target boat and if it hadn't moved at the last instant, one of the divers would have landed right in the cockpit. Various towing demonstrations were put on by Auxiliary facilities, a SCUBA team put on a show and there were some high-speed water skiing demonstrations. This all took place close to the stately London Bridge.

NOTES

Notice in the above description of the air/sea show that messages from the aircraft about the location of distressed vessels had to be dropped to the Auxiliary vessels in bottles. This was necessitated by the short-sighted FCC rule that boats could not communicate on the same frequencies as aircraft. If a pilot had particularly good aim, he could drop the bottle right on the coxswain's noggin. As a side note, the smoke bomb (in a pail aboard the "distressed" vessel spewed out hundreds of burning embers that burned tiny holes in the boat's upholstery.
