NOTES

As our membership grew and our folks became proficient in our tasks of promoting boating safety, we began to gain recognition from other agencies and the boating public. Of course, the hospitality of our parent organization with the trip on a cutter also built morale and enthusiasm.

SCRAPBOOK

DIVISION IX

T.K. Brown, DCP IX

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of Division IX Board and Staff for the support given me in the year and a half I have been a member here. It has been pleasing and rewarding to see the participation in the Membership Training programs. These classes have turned out many Crewman Towmasters, Communicators, several Navigators and two Masters in the past year. For a small group of "Desert-Rat-Boatmen" this is quite an accomplishment. This is an area where the full concept of SAR patrols is inconceivable, but the training and skills are still sought after. Again, my congratulations to all the members of this farspread division - and keep up the fine work.

Flotilla 92 Conducting

Member Training Classes

Flotilla 92, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, has initiated a series of training classes for conditional members.

First class was held last week. Classes will continue every Monday at 7:30 p.m. for the next three weeks at the elementary school.

Jury Utkin, vice commander of the Flotilla, is the instructor. He pointed out that before becoming a regular member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, each conditional member or interested person must be at least 18 years of age and must be a citizen of the United States.

Prior to regular membership, conditional members must demonstrate proficiency in piloting and rules of the road, seamanship and knowledge of the U.S. Coast Guard and Auxiliary.

The rudiments of internal combustion engines, communications, First Aid, flag etiquette, and federal boating regulations, standards for facility inspections and official orders also must be mastered.

Despite the wide range of subjects, Utkin said the course was not difficult and was given without charge.

Utkin will be among five Flotilla 92 members who will be attending a Division 9 meeting Sept. 13-14 in Page, Ariz.

Others making the trip will be Commander Hank Menke and his wife, Edna; Ron Brill, operations officer; and Rose Brill, supply officer.

Flotilla 92 now has turned in a total of 2970 man hours in 1969, most of them patrolling Lake Havasu. Members of the Auxiliary also have accumulated 7715 miles attending meetings and other activities of the Auxiliary.

Next meeting of the Auxiliary will be held at 6:30 p.m. September 18 at the Flying Carpet Restaurant and Lounge. Dinner will follow cocktails at 7:30 p.m.

A color film also will be shown at the meeting.

Flotilla 92 will hold a social water cruise and picnic October 5. Boats will leave at 1:00 p.m. from Lake Havasu City Marina.

Hank Menke, Commander of Flotilla 92, holds the Harold Ivers Perpetual Trophy. The award is given for the "most assists at sea" for a flotilla in the 11th Coast Guard District. Menke accepted the award for the local flotilla at the 14th Annual Coast Guard Auxiliary District and Commodore's Ball recently at the Bahia Motor Hotel in San Diego, California.

The Auxiliary on patrol

Water bugs? Not exactly - just a few of the boats seen on Saguaro Lake on a busy weekend

Dean Rowe checks fire extinguisher on boat as part of Courtesy Motorboat Examination.

Young mermaid checks the boating action on the lake with binoculars. Chances are she will spot some sort of unsafe practice.
