Statewide AUXILIARY GROWTH PROGRAM FOR THE STATE OF ARIZONA. Auxiliary Convention in Phoenix with the Governor’s Representative and State Agencies participating in the creation of a full-blown statewide program. The Sheriff of Arizona had the impression that the Auxiliary would take their patrols away if we entered into an agreement. At this point, we were discussing our interest only in the Courtesy Motorboat Examination and the Public Education phase in this area. The package was accepted and they will help with getting members in the Auxiliary in Arizona

NOTES

The chartering of Division IX and Flotillas 93 and 98 came about largely through the efforts of District Eleven Vice Commodore Herb Packard and his untiring team of instructors. It is interesting to note here that from the very beginnings of our Division, there have been "rice-bowl" concerns with other agencies. It has always been a major effort on the part of the Coast Guard and its Auxiliary to convince these agencies (and the general public) that our function is to promote boating safety through Public Education classes, Courtesy Motorboat Examinations, and Patrols (both reimbursed and non-reimbursed). To this day, we are still working hard to convince the public that we are NOT law enforcement, that we don't "snitch" to the Coast Guard, and that we are not trying to put salvage/towing operations and law enforcement officers out of business. It is a credit to the Coast Guard and our membership that we can still do a viable job of promoting boating safety with our non-threatening format.
